ISLAMABAD: In an effort to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Muharram-ul-Haram, the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), under the guidance of Federal Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has issued comprehensive operational directives to Distribution Companies (DISCOs), the National Power Control Centre (NPCC), and the National Grid Company (NGC). These measures are particularly focused on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, coinciding with the observance of Ashura.

According to Press Information Department, the instructions highlight the Government’s commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring the seamless provision of essential services during this significant period in the Islamic calendar. DISCOs have been instructed to engage in consultative meetings with local authorities and law enforcement to prepare for Muharram processions and gatherings. Chief Engineers of DISCOs will oversee the continuity of electricity supply, aided by focal persons at the Circle level for coordination with authorities and community representatives.

Maintenance of electric networks servicing Majaalis and Imam Bargahs is to be completed by the 7th of Muharram. Precautionary measures, such as rectifying hanging wires along procession routes, are mandated to prevent mishaps. Emergency teams and control rooms will be on standby, and contact information will be widely distributed to assist the public in reporting issues. Operational staff are required to be present during Ashura, with no leaves permitted, and additional teams will be ready to handle emergencies.

At the transmission level, NGC is tasked with ensuring power delivery to DISCOs aligns with NPCC’s allocations. Regional Control Centres will manage contingencies, and DISCOs must follow NPCC’s load allocations to prevent system instability. Contingency plans for feeder loads and emergency generator readiness are also emphasized.

Strict vigilance against unauthorized activity on the distribution network is required, and adherence to safety protocols is mandatory throughout Muharram. The Power Division emphasizes its dedication to protecting citizens and infrastructure during this sacred period and calls for coordinated efforts from all stakeholders to ensure a dignified and uninterrupted observance of Ashura across Pakistan.
