Politically Empowered Women Key to Strengthen Democracy

Islamabad, July 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): Politically empowered women key to strengthen democracy: Political Parties in unison to Prioritize Women Empowerment and Gender Equality in Election Manifestoes Inclusive and representative democracy interlinked with Political participation of all segments of society: Secretary WPC Ms. Shahida Rahmani.

In a ground-breaking display of unity, Political Parties come together at the “Roundtable of Political Parties on Women’s Manifesto 2023”, organised by federal Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) in collaboration with the UN Women. During the two-day conference, participants will engage in dynamic discussions to identify key issues concerning women’s empowerment and gender equality. The objective is to ensure that these issues are given top priority and integrated into the core principles of their respective election manifestos.

In her inaugural address, Ms. Shahida Rehmani, Secretary of the WPC, highlighted the upcoming general election in Pakistan and stressed the need to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities for women. She emphasized that women have played significant roles in Pakistan’s political landscape, including having the honor of the first female Prime Minister in the Muslim world. However, more concerted efforts are required to ensure a fair, equitable, and inclusive Pakistan for all citizens. Ms. Rehmani underscored that the political participation of all segments of society is indispensable for a truly inclusive and representative democracy. Thus, election manifestoes hold paramount importance as they reflect our democratic values and collective vision for the future.

The Secretary of the WPC further emphasized the Caucus’s commitment to challenging stereotypes, dismantling barriers, and fostering a gender-inclusive society where women can unleash their full potential. “It is imperative to ensure that political parties and them manifestoes include comprehensive, actionable, and practical plans for the empowerment of women,” she added. Ms. Rehmani asserted that an educated, healthy, and empowered woman sitting at the decision-making table epitomizes a peaceful and progressive society. This momentous Roundtable serves as a testament to the dedication of political parties and civil society to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in Pakistan. By aligning them manifestoes with these objectives, political parties contribute to the realization of a society where women are empowered to thrive and contribute significantly in progress of the country.
