Political Leaders Detained in Jammu Ahead of Pro-Palestine Rally

Srinagar, Numerous political leaders and social activists were taken into custody by the Indian police in Jammu region on Sunday, in a bid to thwart their attempts to stage a demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian population against Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, these detentions were carried out across the Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts. The call for the demonstrations, aimed against Israel and in support of the Palestinian cause, was issued by the Jammu-based United Peace Alliance, a coalition of political and social entities.

The Alliance had previously urged the public to assemble at Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu for the said protests. Posters indicating the protest had been visibly displayed across Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts. Despite these efforts, many key figures and members of the United Peace Alliance, including Mir Shahid Saleem, Sheikh Abdul Rahman, ID Khajuria, Subash Mehta, and Sukhdev Singh, were apprehended by the police.

These leaders have since vociferously criticized the police’s actions, emphasizing that such measures cannot stifle the voices advocating for justice and righteousness.
