New York: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advance the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir and to affirm the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. This request was made during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Session.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during his discussion with Secretary-General Guterres, Prime Minister Sharif detailed the current conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting Pakistan’s grave concerns regarding India’s actions in the region. He emphasized the importance of resolving the dispute to promote enduring peace and stability in South Asia.
In addition to the Kashmir issue, the Prime Minister condemned what he described as Israel’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians, advocating for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. He called on the global community to hold Israel accountable and reiterated Pakistan’s support for the creation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine.
Prime Minister Sharif also addressed the increase in Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims globally, reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to contributing to international peace and security, particularly through its upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term.
Furthermore, he expressed support for Secretary-General Guterres’s initiative to organize the “Summit of the Future.” He hoped the summit’s outcomes would assist developing nations in overcoming financial obstacles to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and climate objectives.
Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s significant contributions to the UN, especially its role in international peacekeeping efforts.
