Islamabad: The Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR), led by its Convenor Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan, MNA, visited the Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to meet Speaker and Acting President Ch. Latif Akbar, along with other officials. The collaboration with Save the Children aims to establish a Child Rights Caucus Chapter in AJK, enhancing legislative efforts in child protection, improving education access, and combating child labor and exploitation.
According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the visit aligns with the vision of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to strengthen parliamentary engagement in child welfare. The delegation, including several Members of the National Assembly and representatives from Save the Children, sought to foster legislative cooperation and advocate for child-friendly policies in line with national and international commitments.
During the meeting, Speaker Ch. Latif Akbar expressed support for forming provincial and legislative caucuses to ensure collective action for children’s wellbeing. He assured PCCR and the National Assembly Secretariat of notification upon the official formation of the Child Rights Caucus in AJK.
Ministers and Members of the AJK Assembly emphasized their commitment to collaborating with PCCR and Save the Children. Their focus will be on child rights advocacy, combating malnutrition, ensuring quality education and healthcare, and enforcing child protection laws. This partnership aims to reinforce institutional efforts to safeguard children’s rights and foster a supportive environment for future generations.
