Pakistan’s Shipbuilding Industry Undergoes Major Modernization

KARACHI: Pakistan’s shipbuilding industry is undergoing significant transformation with modernization initiatives introduced by the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms. These measures aim to revitalize the sector by assigning Karachi Shipyard a pivotal role in advancing commercial shipbuilding, including the production of vessels for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation.

According to Radio Pakistan, efforts have been intensified to establish joint ventures with international shipyards, a move that could enhance domestic capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign entities. The strategy includes awarding domestic shipbuilding contracts to the national shipyard, a decision expected to conserve foreign exchange and generate employment opportunities for engineers and skilled workers within the country.

Further directives have been issued to standardize the quality of harbor craft nationwide, aligning with the broader vision of establishing Pakistan as a regional shipbuilding hub. Experts suggest that the country possesses considerable potential to achieve this ambition, given the strategic measures currently underway.
