Islamabad: Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary between the United States and Iran, as diplomatic efforts to bring the two nations back to negotiations gain traction. Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States and other major nations, emphasized Pakistan’s pivotal role in facilitating dialogue during a recent television interview.

According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Masood Khan described the renewed mediation efforts as a significant diplomatic opportunity, with Pakistan acting as a trusted channel between Washington and Tehran. He highlighted the recent U.S. sanctions against Iran as a strategic move meant to encourage negotiations rather than initiate military conflict.

Masood Khan pointed out that the sanctions, which impact financial and commercial networks across approximately 100 countries, could have broader economic implications, influencing nations like China, India, and several Gulf states due to their economic ties with Iran. He also noted the enduring Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Iran as a hopeful sign for future negotiations.

Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran was credited with advancing communication and persuading both sides to consider resuming direct talks. Masood Khan highlighted Pakistan’s credibility with both Washington and Tehran as a crucial factor in the diplomatic process, alongside other mediators such as Qatar, Oman, and Iraq.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of negotiation, with Masood Khan stressing the need for agreements on freedom of navigation and easing sanctions. He also noted the potential economic benefits for Pakistan, including reduced energy pressures and improved trade prospects.

Despite the progress, Masood Khan acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear program and related sanctions. He emphasized that a stable relationship between the U.S. and Iran would benefit not only the two countries but the broader region and international community, with Pakistan’s mediation playing a crucial role in preventing escalation and fostering a sustainable diplomatic solution.
