Pakistan’s President Pledges Enhanced Cooperation with China for Sustainable Transportation


Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has announced Pakistan’s dedication to developing a safe, sustainable, and eco-friendly transportation system, in collaboration with China. This commitment was voiced during his video message at the Global Sustainable Transport Forum-2024 in Beijing, emphasizing the critical role of resilient infrastructure in achieving sustainability and efficiency in transportation.



According to Press Information Department, President Zardari expressed these views while addressing the forum, held from September 25-26, 2024. He highlighted the need for low-carbon transport solutions to meet the global demands of the population. In his address, the President praised China for its leadership in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a special focus on transportation.



The President shared details about specific initiatives undertaken by Pakistan, such as the introduction of pink buses for women to ensure their safe and comfortable travel. He also mentioned the significant improvement in rural road accessibility in Pakistan, which has reached 92%, enhancing connectivity and supporting sustainable development.



Furthermore, President Zardari discussed the challenges faced by Pakistan, including the sustainable maintenance of infrastructure and the impacts of climate change. He recounted the recent severe weather events that have damaged the country’s transport infrastructure, isolating millions in rural locations.



Concluding his message, President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for sustainable transport development among member states and lauded China’s contribution to regional and global economic prosperity under President Xi’s leadership.
