ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reached a significant milestone by producing 40,034 PhD graduates, as revealed by the Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics PhD Country Directory. However, the critical question facing the nation is whether these academic credentials align with the country’s future needs.

According to Gilani Research Foundation, the expansion of doctoral education has been substantial over the past two decades. While the annual PhD production was relatively modest in the early 2000s, it has accelerated rapidly since 2018, surpassing 3,000 graduates per year and peaking at more than 3,400 in recent years. This growth reflects a considerable enhancement in Pakistan’s research and higher education capacity.

The distribution of PhD graduates in Pakistan also highlights notable patterns. Approximately two-thirds (64.8%) of PhD graduates are men, while 35.2% are women, pointing to persistent gender disparities at the highest level of higher education. In terms of fields of study, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics lead the way with 14,443 PhD graduates, accounting for more than one-third of the national total. They are followed by Arts & Humanities (7,396) and Social Sciences, Journalism & Information (3,758).

While the growth in doctoral education represents a significant achievement, the challenge now lies in ensuring that these graduates are trained in fields that align with national priorities. Addressing gender gaps and creating sufficient opportunities for these highly qualified individuals to contribute to research, innovation, and teaching are critical next steps.

The analysis by Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics, which used data from the Pakistan PhD Country Directory Dashboard, underscores the importance of aligning doctoral education with the country’s scientific and economic capacity. The need to translate the growing PhD pipeline into tangible contributions to national development remains a pressing concern.
