Pakistan’s Energy Sector Sees Significant Shift Toward Clean Energy

Islamabad: The Minister of State for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, met with Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari to discuss strategies aimed at advancing clean energy and addressing climate change challenges in Pakistan. The meeting highlighted the progress in the country’s energy sector reforms and set ambitious goals for the future.

According to Press Information Department, Federal Minister Leghari noted that clean energy now comprises 52 percent of Pakistan’s energy mix, with plans to increase this to 90 percent by 2036. He emphasized the role of public solarization, describing it as a consumer-driven revolution impacting domestic, agricultural, and commercial sectors. This shift is viewed as a crucial step towards energy self-reliance.

Leghari also shared that the government is prioritizing the conversion of imported coal power plants to local coal. This move aims to reduce generation costs and lessen the financial burden of fuel imports, thereby conserving foreign exchange.

Dr. Shezra Mansab praised these advancements and emphasized the importance of reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels. She highlighted the climate vulnerability Pakistan faces, making the transition to renewable energy a national priority. Both ministers agreed on the need for continued collaboration between their ministries to achieve sustainable energy and climate resilience goals.
