Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a high-level meeting with a Chinese delegation to discuss enhanced bilateral cooperation in the livestock sector, focusing on buffalo embryo exports and the promotion of Pakistan’s high-value dairy breeds in international markets.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting included senior ministry officials, representatives from the Animal Quarantine Department, technical experts, and Chinese companies involved in livestock breeding and biotechnology. Discussions centered on the potential for buffalo embryo exports to China and opportunities for collaboration in livestock genetics and modern breeding technologies. The Chinese delegation expressed interest in Pakistan’s buffalo breeds, emphasizing the Neeli Ravi breed’s superior milk production and genetic characteristics.

Federal Minister Hussain highlighted the potential for export growth and foreign exchange earnings through Pakistan’s premium dairy breeds, particularly in strengthening agricultural trade with China. Dr. Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi, Senior Director Incharge (Animal Sciences Division), discussed the need for a comprehensive framework for exporting biological and genetic material, emphasizing the protection of Pakistan’s intellectual and genetic ownership rights. The proposed Material Transfer Agreement aims to facilitate international cooperation and safeguard these assets.

Experts at the meeting noted the global livestock industry’s shift towards advanced breeding technologies and highlighted Pakistan’s potential as a supplier of elite dairy genetics. The Chinese delegation welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to establish a transparent mechanism for genetic cooperation, expressing confidence in the partnership’s potential for trade, investment, and scientific collaboration.

The meeting also addressed the global demand for Pakistan’s livestock genetics, including the Sahiwal cattle breed, and the government’s commitment to modernizing the livestock sector and expanding export avenues. Minister Hussain assured the Chinese delegation of continued efforts to foster international partnerships promoting innovation and sustainable growth in Pakistan’s livestock sector.
