New York: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has highlighted the ongoing threat of terrorism originating from Afghanistan during a United Nations Security Council meeting. Ahmad emphasized the serious implications for Pakistan and the broader region, urging international action to address the issue.

According to Radio Pakistan, Ahmad stated that Afghanistan is currently providing sanctuary to various terrorist groups and proxies. He underscored the significant threat posed by terrorism emanating from Afghan soil, not only to Afghanistan’s immediate neighbors but also to international peace and security. Ahmad warned of the potential spillover effects, emphasizing that they extend beyond Pakistan.

In his remarks, Ahmad made clear that Pakistan would not tolerate attacks targeting its border posts, law enforcement, and civilian infrastructure. He mentioned that Pakistan’s counter-terrorism operations have resulted in the confiscation of modern military equipment left behind by foreign forces in Afghanistan. Ahmad affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to taking necessary defensive measures to protect its citizens and sovereignty, and vowed to continue operations to degrade terrorist capabilities.

Addressing remarks from Afghan and Indian representatives, Ahmad clarified that Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts are not aimed at the Afghan people but are focused on neutralizing threats from Afghan soil. He asserted that these efforts adhere to international law and the country’s right to self-defense. Ahmad also accused India of playing a destabilizing role in Afghanistan and urged India to cease supporting terrorism against Pakistan from Afghan territory.
