Pakistan Reaffirms Opposition to UNSC Permanent Membership Expansion

NEW YORK: Pakistan has reiterated its opposition to the expansion of permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing the need for either the abolition or severe restriction of veto power held by current permanent members.

According to Radio Pakistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed the country’s position during the 3rd Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Cluster of “Question of Veto.” He firmly opposed any moves to expand the veto power or to add new individual permanent members to the UNSC. Ahmad stated that increasing the number of vetoes would only exacerbate existing challenges within the Security Council.
