Pakistan Embraces Strengthened Ties with Russia Amid Shifting Global Order

Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, delivered a keynote address at a recent webinar, highlighting the significant progress in Pakistan-Russia relations over the past two decades. Speaking at the event titled “Pakistan-Russia Bilateral Relationship at the cusp of shifting global order,” the Minister emphasized the transformation from past distrust to a partnership marked by cooperation in trade, energy, defense, and technology. The evolving diplomatic relationship has been underscored by recent meetings between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Press Information Department, as Co-Chairman of the Russia-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission, Leghari stressed the importance of regular interactions with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev, describing the commission as crucial to their comprehensive ties. The bilateral cooperation extends through structured frameworks, including security consultations and strategic alignment at international forums such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The Minister highlighted Pakistan’s interest in joining the International North-South Transport Corridor, which aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This initiative follows Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk’s comments on linking the corridor with Gwadar Port. Additionally, the Minister mentioned Russia’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s role in easing tensions between Iran and the United States.

To further enhance trade and address structural challenges, the two nations plan to sign the Program of Economic Cooperation until 2030. The recent signing of the Russia-Pakistan Readmission Agreement aims to simplify visa processes, promoting business and cultural exchanges. Pakistan’s active participation in international forums, such as the Kazan Forum 2026, reflects its commitment to fostering stronger ties with Russia and contributing to regional stability and economic integration.
