Islamabad: Pakistan has embarked on a pioneering initiative to develop its first National Urban Strategy, targeting the enhancement of climate resilience in urban areas. The strategy aims to address critical challenges such as floods, heatwaves, water shortages, and unregulated construction, which have increasingly threatened the nation’s urban centers.

According to Radio Pakistan, the process was officially launched at a national workshop co-organized by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and UN-Habitat Pakistan. Climate Change Secretary Aisha Humera Moriani presided over the event, which took place against the backdrop of frequent climate-related disasters, including the Swat floods and recurrent urban flooding in Karachi.

The workshop brought together federal and provincial officials, disaster management authorities, urban planners, development experts, and international organizations. These stakeholders will collaborate to craft a comprehensive roadmap aimed at safeguarding the rapidly expanding cities of Pakistan.
