Islamabad: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan held a virtual meeting with Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Rick Switzer to discuss strengthening bilateral trade, advancing ongoing negotiations, and exploring new economic cooperation opportunities between the two countries.
According to Press Information Department, Deputy USTR Rick Switzer began the meeting by acknowledging Pakistan’s role in promoting regional stability and its efforts in facilitating dialogue amid recent regional developments. He emphasized that such contributions foster a favorable environment for global trade and economic cooperation.
Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan expressed appreciation for the U.S. recognition of Pakistan’s efforts in regional peace initiatives. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to global engagement and mediation, stressing that regional stability is crucial for global trade and economic connectivity.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade, aiming for a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement. The Minister emphasized Pakistan’s interest in expanding trade with the United States across key sectors, stating that the country seeks to diversify trade and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The U.S. side acknowledged the potential for strengthening bilateral trade and expressed readiness to work with Pakistan to advance ongoing negotiations. Both parties agreed that a reciprocal trade framework would support sustainable economic engagement.
Deputy USTR Rick Switzer appreciated the constructive discussions, stating the U.S. values its engagement with Pakistan and anticipates continued collaboration to advance a beneficial trade relationship.
Federal Secretary Commerce Jawad Paul remarked on the constructive engagements on ART, noting limited areas under discussion. He emphasized that Pakistan’s technical teams are closely engaged with U.S. counterparts to address outstanding issues.
The meeting also addressed digital trade and regulatory cooperation, highlighting the significance of ongoing technical-level engagement to facilitate progress and maintain momentum towards concluding the agreement.
Concluding the meeting, Jam Kamal Khan invited the U.S. side for a future visit to Pakistan, reaffirming the commitment to strengthening economic ties. Both sides expressed confidence in continued engagement and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming weeks.
