Islamabad: Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari met with a high-level Spanish delegation led by Ambassador Carlos Aragon to discuss ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s power sector and explore investment opportunities. The meeting also focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting included discussions on the government’s measures to improve the energy framework and the establishment of a competitive electricity market. The privatization process for three power distribution companies has been initiated, with plans to include more companies in a phased manner. The Spanish Ambassador expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace in the Middle East and showed interest in the development of Pakistan’s power sector.

The Federal Minister highlighted investment opportunities in transmission networks, grid digitalization, battery energy storage systems, and advanced metering infrastructure. Nearly 16 million electricity meters are being converted to a digital system, which presents opportunities for investors. A new research and innovation programme under the Power Planning and Monitoring Company is also set to be launched.

Ambassador Aragon noted the expertise of Spanish companies in defence and digital technologies, which could aid in modernizing Pakistan’s transmission and metering systems. Both sides committed to further engagement to improve infrastructure and facilitate investment opportunities.
