Islamabad: A European Union parliamentary delegation, led by ?erban Dimitrie Sturdza, met with Pakistan’s EU Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs to reinforce commitments to democratic values and human rights. The joint meeting in Islamabad emphasized collaboration on regional issues and the enhancement of trade and investment.

During the meeting, Hina Rabbani Khar, Convener of the Pakistan-EU Parliamentary Friendship Group, expressed gratitude for EU support and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to aligning with international human rights standards. She emphasized the importance of people-to-people engagements and proposed initiatives for green and blue economy collaborations, along with advocating for streamlined visa policies.

The EU delegation outlined their visit’s aim to deepen bilateral relations, particularly in cooperation across various sectors. Discussions included regional dynamics, with MNA Muhammad Ijaz Ul Haq raising concerns about Kashmir and Afghanistan’s abandoned armaments. MNA Shazia Marri highlighted the need for increased interaction between elected representatives to strengthen ties, underscoring the importance of free expression while noting sensitivities within Muslim and Christian communities.

Concluding the discussions, Khar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to democracy and rule of law, despite facing internal and regional challenges. Both sides expressed determination to enhance dialogue mechanisms and address shared challenges like climate change, regional instability, and human rights.

The meeting saw participation from several Pakistani officials, including Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, Minister of State for Climate Change, and members of the National Assembly. The EU delegation comprised Members of the European Parliament and the EU Ambassador to Pakistan.
