Pakistan and Ethiopia Seek to Strengthen Ties Through Trade and Cooperation


Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Ethiopian Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral relations between Pakistan and Ethiopia during a meeting at Mr. Gilani’s residence. Both parties recognized the potential for growth in trade and economic cooperation, aiming to forge stronger connections between the two nations.



Mr. Gilani highlighted the long-standing collaboration between Pakistan and Ethiopia on international platforms, advocating for increased trade and business partnerships. He introduced the Special Investment Facilitation Council, designed to unite stakeholders and foster mutually beneficial projects. The recent launch of direct flights between Karachi and Addis Ababa was welcomed as a step towards improving connectivity.



The chairman Senate noted the success of NADRA’s digitalization projects in several African countries, suggesting that Ethiopia could benefit from similar services. He expressed gratitude for Ethiopia’s online visa facilitation for Pakistani nationals, which aims to enhance people-to-people exchanges.



Despite existing trade links, Mr. Gilani acknowledged that the current trade volume does not reflect the full potential of both economies. He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding cooperation with African countries, particularly in trade, investment, and economic sectors. He noted Pakistan’s exports of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to Ethiopia and the potential for further growth.



Mr. Gilani also highlighted Pakistan’s educational and defense collaboration with Ethiopia, including scholarships and training for Ethiopian diplomats. He extended an invitation to the Ethiopian parliament for a visit, recalling the historical ties initiated by former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1972.



Ambassador Abdula expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support, acknowledging the shared history of cooperation between the two countries. He emphasized the potential for further collaboration in various sectors, reinforcing the desire to strengthen ties.
