Pakistan and Canada Discuss Energy Cooperation and Investment Opportunities


Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, held discussions with a Canadian delegation led by High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan on enhancing bilateral relations, cooperation in the energy sector, and exploring investment opportunities. The meeting highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two countries and potential future initiatives.



According to Press Information Department, the Canadian High Commissioner acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in promoting a ceasefire amidst U.S.-Iran tensions and expressed hope for Pakistan’s continued support in the dialogue process. The Federal Minister emphasized Canada’s role in fostering regional peace through dialogue.



The meeting also covered Pakistan’s energy sector achievements, with the Federal Minister noting that 55% of the country’s energy mix came from clean sources last year. Plans to expand hydropower, shift coal power plants to local coal, and promote Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) were discussed. The Canadian High Commissioner praised these initiatives, highlighting the importance of battery disposal planning with the rise of electric vehicles.



The Federal Minister announced the upcoming introduction of a Time-of-Use tariff to encourage efficient electricity use, benefiting industrial consumers with lower costs during specific hours. He also described ongoing reforms based on a least-cost and sustainable approach in the power sector.



Investment prospects were a key focus, with the Canadian High Commissioner mentioning interest from Canadian company JCM in Pakistan’s energy sector. The Federal Minister welcomed foreign investment, particularly in electricity markets and transmission infrastructure. Both parties agreed to further technical discussions.



Additionally, the Canadian High Commissioner invited Pakistani professionals to the Global Energy Show in Canada this summer, emphasizing its potential for technology transfer and cooperation. The Federal Minister supported this initiative, recognizing its value in strengthening ties between the two nations.
