Pakistan Advocates for Preventive Diplomacy to Protect Women in Conflict

New York: Pakistan has emphasized the importance of preventing armed conflicts through preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, in accordance with the UN Charter, as the most effective method of safeguarding women and girls from the consequences of war. This statement was delivered by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, the Acting Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, during the UN Security Council’s open debate on “Women, Peace and Security in the Next Quarter-Century: Fulfilling the Promise through Implementation.”

According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Jadoon urged the UN Security Council to focus on addressing the root causes of conflicts, such as prolonged foreign occupation and the denial of self-determination rights, while ensuring women’s meaningful involvement in peace efforts. He recalled the 26th anniversary of the Security Council Resolution 1325 and noted that, despite normative progress, a significant gap remains between international commitments and the realities faced by women in conflict situations.

Ambassador Jadoon called for moving beyond commitments to achieve effective implementation and measurable outcomes on the ground. He highlighted the contributions of Pakistani women to UN peacekeeping and advocated for progress in the four pillars of the Women, Peace and Security agenda. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of sustainable financing, accountability, and protections against technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized women’s full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery efforts.
