Dehradun: In a significant move, the BJP-led government in Uttarakhand has sealed over 170 madrasas across the state, citing non-compliance with registration requirements. The closures are part of a broader initiative targeting Muslim religious institutions, drawing criticism from community leaders and civil rights groups.

Authorities claim the madrasas failed to register with either the Madrasa Board or the state education department. According to a press release from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s office, the decision followed findings from surveys conducted by government-appointed teams.

The scope of the crackdown may expand, as officials have disclosed that nearly 500 additional madrasas are under investigation and could face similar actions. This has sparked concern among local communities, especially since many of the affected institutions have been operational for decades.
