New Zealand Triumphs Over Pakistan in Napier ODI, Secures Series Lead

Napier: New Zealand emerged victorious against Pakistan by 73 runs in the first One Day International, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand set a formidable target of 344 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Mark Chapman led the scoring with 132 runs, while Daryl Mitchell contributed 76 runs. Muhammad Abbas made a notable debut, scoring the fastest half-century with 52 runs off 26 balls.

In the Pakistani bowling lineup, Irfan Khan took three wickets, while Haris Rauf and debutant Akif Javed each secured two wickets. Debutant Mohammad Ali and Naseem Shah claimed one wicket apiece.

In response, Pakistan’s innings concluded at 271 runs in 44.1 overs. Babar Azam was the top scorer with 78 runs, and Salman Ali Agha added 58 runs. Debutant Usman Khan contributed 39 runs to the total.

Nathan Smith excelled in New Zealand’s bowling, taking four crucial wickets to restrict Pakistan’s chase.

The series will continue with the second match scheduled for Wednesday in Hamilton.
