NDMA Chairman Calls for Review of Emergency Stocks Ahead of Monsoon Season

Islamabad, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), emphasized the critical need for preparedness and timely training of emergency responders in light of the upcoming monsoon season. He urged for a review of stock positions to effectively address potential summer contingencies such as heatwaves, droughts, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and cyclones.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a conference held in Islamabad today, the urgency of taking proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of disasters was discussed. The NDMA technical team, along with the Pakistan Meteorological Department, informed attendees that rainfall during this year’s monsoon season is expected to be forty to sixty percent above normal across the country. Additionally, the Federal Flood Commission updated on the telemetry stations network and early warning systems along the Kirthar and Suleman Ranges, which are crucial for timely flood alerts. The Health Ministry also presented a plan to monitor and control the surge of vector and waterborne diseases anticipated during the monsoon. The NDMA has committed to ongoing monitoring and collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a robust response to any emergencies that may arise.
