National Assembly Standing Committee on Energy (Petroleum Division) meets

Islamabad, August 27, 2021 (PPI-OT): The Standing Committee on Energy (Petroleum Division) met under the Chairmanship of Mr. Imran Khattak, MNA. The Committee considered “The Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2021” (Govt. Bill), and sought clarification on certain proposed amendments from the Ministry and directed that in conjunction with Ministry of Law and Justice, they should come up with proper definition in the next scheduled meeting. The said Bill was deferred for the next scheduled meeting.

On an explanation sought from the Petroleum Division for expansive purchase by Pakistan LNG in the week of 26-30 July, 2021 of four cargos. It was told that because of due diligence and through spot LNG procurement a saving of 41 billion rupees has been made.

The major issues with LNG market in Pakistan is that there is no gas/LNG storage in Country and existing PPRA regime does not suit spot cargo imports. Also Trading in LNG futures requires massive financial guarantees which PSO and PLL are not able to provide (circular debt issues). The Committee asked the Ministry to interact with electronic and print media on this issue. The Committee showed annoyance on the unjustified expulsion of employees in SSGC and directed that a report in this regard should be submitted within one week.
