New Delhi, Narendra Modi was sworn in as India’s prime minister on Sunday for a third term, raising concerns among analysts about the potential impact on the country’s minorities, particularly Muslims.
According to Kashmir Media Service, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Modi at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president’s palace in New Delhi. Modi, who began his political career as a publicist for the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), becomes only the second person after independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru to serve a third consecutive term as prime minister.
At 73, Modi secured his third term in elections that concluded on June 1, backed by 14 regional parties in his BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This marks a departure from his previous two terms, where his party won an outright majority. Despite the victory, the outcome was seen as a setback for Modi, as pre-election surveys and exit polls had predicted the BJP would secure even more seats than in 2019.
