Muslim Teacher Resigns Over Hijab Ban in Kolkata College

Kolkata, Sanjida Qadar, a Muslim teacher at LJD Law College in Kolkata, has resigned after the college’s authorities reportedly banned her from wearing a hijab at work. This incident marks a significant controversy in the region, reflecting ongoing tensions around religious expressions in educational settings.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Qadar’s resignation followed a directive from the college’s governing body, which she claims infringes on her religious beliefs and personal dignity. The issue has sparked a reaction from local political figures, including West Bengal minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who has called for an apology from the college president and questioned whether the institution was influenced by nationalist groups like RSS and the BJP.

The controversy escalated as the college later termed the incident a misunderstanding and asked Qadar to withdraw her resignation. However, Qadar has expressed her intent not to return to her position, signaling a stand against what she perceives as a violation of her rights to religious freedom.
