Beijing: Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik has called for strengthened cooperation between Pakistan and China in the fields of climate research, glacier protection, and sustainable development. Speaking at the 5th China Xizang Trans-Himalaya Forum in China, Dr. Malik emphasized the urgent need to address the existential threat that climate change poses to the natural resources and communities within the region.

According to Radio Pakistan, Dr. Malik highlighted Pakistan’s significance as home to approximately 13,500 glaciers, which play a critical role in the nation’s civilization, water security, and ecological balance. He warned of the increasing dangers these glaciers face due to rising greenhouse gas emissions, which are accelerating global warming and glacier melt. The consequences, he noted, include more severe floods and droughts, with recent flood disasters in Pakistan resulting in the loss of around 6,000 lives.

Dr. Malik advocated for expanded scientific collaboration on glacier conservation and climate change, proposing the creation of a virtual green university. This institution would aim to unite researchers and institutions from across the region to engage in joint climate research. He praised the Trans-Himalaya Forum as a vital platform for enhancing bilateral cooperation and unlocking new opportunities for sustainable regional development.
