Mohmand: Construction on the Mohmand Dam, a significant infrastructure project in Pakistan, is progressing according to schedule, with completion anticipated between 2026 and 2027. The project, which involves substantial engineering efforts such as the construction of spillways, coffer dams, and diversion tunnels, is expected to provide vital water storage, irrigation, and power generation capabilities.
According to a statement by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority, Chairman Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) recently visited the site to assess ongoing activities. During his visit, he was briefed on the progress of key components, including the Spillway, which is ahead of schedule, and the Downstream Coffer Dam, now at its design height. Construction of both the Main Dam and various tunnels is actively underway, with significant excavation efforts in progress.
The briefing also covered the challenges and achievements in various areas of the project, highlighting the need for enhanced quarry development. In a subsequent meeting, the Chairman emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines while maintaining quality standards. He urged contractors to allocate additional resources as necessary to meet these goals.
The Mohmand Dam, located on the River Swat in the Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will be one of the tallest concrete-face-rock-fill dams globally. Once completed, it will have a gross water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet and is expected to irrigate over 18,000 acres of new land, in addition to supporting existing irrigation needs. The dam will also enhance electricity generation, boasting a capacity of 800 megawatts, and supply drinking water to Peshawar.
