Islamabad: The Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research convened its 13th meeting at the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council in Islamabad, chaired by Syed Tariq Hussain, MNA. The Committee reviewed several ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and development in Pakistan.

According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, discussions focused on a 20 million Euro foreign loan under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) National Reforms Program. This program is designed to enhance the olive value chain, provide certified training on high-value crops, and support the establishment of eco-villages with climate-resilient technology. The Committee emphasized the need for public awareness to improve the impact of these projects.

The Ministry proposed the establishment of Seed Certification Laboratories in Khuzdar, Turbat, and Loralai, with a project budget of Rs. 180 million for a new building. The Committee suggested renting space to reduce costs and time, though the Ministry stressed the need for an ISO-certified facility.

The Pakistan-Korea Joint Program for Certified Potato Seed Production was also discussed, with a focus on achieving self-sustainability in potato seed production. The Ministry plans to distribute certified virus-free seeds starting next year, funded in part by a Rs. 650 million grant-in-aid.

The Committee was briefed on the Horticulture Support Program, aimed at reducing post-harvest losses through technology-driven solutions. The National Program for Animal Disease Surveillance and Control was presented, which seeks to comply with international standards and enhance animal exports.

Efforts to promote farm mechanization and strengthen agricultural research were highlighted, including the installation of agricultural machines and the establishment of an Endowment Fund for the National Agricultural Research System. The Committee also reviewed the National Coordinated Program for the Genetic Improvement of Cattle and Buffalo, urging consultation before its official launch.

Following a review of various projects, including the Pulses Project and rice productivity updates, the Committee approved the proposed schemes with minor suggestions. The meeting was attended by Committee members and senior officials from the relevant departments.
