Islamabad: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindutva ideology is facing increased international scrutiny, following revelations on its role in societal unrest.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the UK Home Office has released a significant report detailing the impact of Modi’s Hindutva ideology. The report highlights the involvement of extremist Hindus in the Leicester riots in the UK in 2022. These disturbances were reportedly initiated when 200 Hindus, masked and chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” marched in the Highfield area.
The British government’s report identifies Hindutva extremism as a key factor in the Leicester riots. As noted in a May 2023 report by the Daily Mail, activists from India’s ruling BJP party were implicated in instigating the riots.
Middle East Eye cites Leicester Mayor Sir Peter Solsby, who remarked that the leaked report underscores the influence of Hindutva ideology, marking the first instance of its detailed analysis in a major government document.
Additionally, a report by Yvette Cooper in The Guardian associates Hindu nationalism with the rise of extremism. Rajiv Sinha, director of Hindus for Human Rights, UK, expressed concern over Hindu extremism’s threat to the UK, hoping the report would bolster efforts to address Hindu nationalism.
Middle East Eye also mentions the RSS, a party closely linked to Prime Minister Modi, as a factor in his ascent to power. The British Home Office report suggests expanding counter-extremism efforts to address the increasing trend of Hindutva extremism.
