Srinagar: The 40-day Chillai Kalan, known for its severe winter conditions, concluded in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir without significant precipitation, raising concerns over water availability in the region.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, while Sonamarg experienced fresh snowfall and some isolated areas witnessed light rain on Wednesday evening, the majority of the Valley stayed dry. This has intensified worries about potential water shortages.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a weak Western Disturbance may result in light rain and snow in parts of Kashmir today. A more robust weather system is anticipated between February 3 and 5.

The persistent dry conditions have caused daytime temperatures to rise, while sub-zero temperatures continue overnight. The absence of snowfall has particularly alarmed farmers and orchardists, as winter snow plays a vital role in replenishing water sources and supporting irrigation during the summer months.
