Massive Gathering Marks 127th Urs of Baba Nizam-ud-Din in Srinagar

Srinagar, Over one lakh devotees converged on Wangat Kangan, known as Baba Nagri, to celebrate the 127th Urs of the Sufi saint Hazrat Baba Nizam-ud-Din Kiyani (RA) in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Urs, a tradition dating back to the 19th century, saw attendees from various districts including Rajouri, Doda, Udhampur, Poonch, Kishtwar, Shopian, Islamabad, Kupwara, and Bandipora. Devotees gathered at the Baba Nagri shrine, participating in a range of religious activities including Quran Khwani and Darood-o-Azqar, which were held during nightlong prayers.

The event concluded with a joint prayer session where attendees prayed for peace, prosperity, unity, brotherhood, and communal harmony. The colorful attire of children and women, along with men in bright headgear, highlighted the festive spirit along the road leading to Baba Nagri. The Urs coincides with the annual migration of the nomadic Gujjars, many of whom bring their livestock as part of their pilgrimage.

Maulana Ghulam Muhiudin Naqashbandi, speaking on the occasion, detailed the life and legacy of Hazrat Mian Nizamuddin Kiyanwai (RA), who migrated from Kashmir to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan in the late 19th century before returning to preach in Baba Nagri. His teachings and writings continue to influence devotees, upheld by his descendants and the ongoing efforts of the shrine management to provide services like a 24-hour free langar for visitors throughout the year, especially during the Urs.
