Mamata Banerjee Threatens Indefinite Protest Over Alleged Fake Voter Enrollments

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of enrolling fake voters from other states into the electoral rolls with the assistance of the Election Commission (EC). She warned of an indefinite protest sit-in before the EC’s office if measures are not taken to address the issue.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Banerjee expressed her concerns during a Trinamool Congress (TMC) conference in Kolkata. She also questioned the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the chief election commissioner, suggesting that the BJP might be attempting to influence the constitutional body.

Banerjee claimed that the alleged manipulation of the voters’ list by the BJP, with the EC’s support, was evident. She referenced her previous 26-day hunger strike during the anti-land acquisition movement in 2006 to emphasize her commitment to protest against the EC if necessary.

The Chief Minister further alleged that the BJP had used similar tactics in Delhi and Maharashtra by enrolling voters from Haryana and Gujarat, which she claims helped the party win elections in those states. She accused the BJP of planning to replicate these tactics in West Bengal by ensuring the enrollment of fake voters in various districts with the EC’s help.
