Srinagar: The Mutahida Majlis-E-Ulema (MMU), a leading religious and social body representing Muslims in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, has demanded immediate dialogue on the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act, 2024. The organization expressed concerns that these changes could affect the autonomy and purpose of Waqf properties in the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the MMU, led by Patron Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, released a statement in Srinagar highlighting fears that the amendments may have adverse effects on religious, social, and charitable institutions. The MMU contends that these changes could significantly impact the welfare and self-governance of the Muslim community in the occupied territory.

The MMU has addressed a letter to Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill, emphasizing the need for timely dialogue. “Considering the gravity of the situation and its potential impact on the community, we once again request you to give us an audience at the earliest possible time,” stated Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. He underscored the importance of acknowledging the concerns of Jammu and Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, in a thoughtful manner.

The letter further advocated for a meeting to facilitate meaningful dialogue, as opposed to unilateral actions, to address the community’s concerns effectively.
