Kashmir Council EU to Seek ICJ Intervention for Return of Kashmir Leaders’ Remains

Brussels: Chairman of Kashmir Council EU, Ali Raza Syed, announced plans to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to demand the return of the mortal remains of Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru from India.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Maqbool Butt was executed on February 11, 1984, and Afzal Guru on February 9, 2013, with their bodies buried in Tihar Jail. Despite repeated appeals from their families, India has not released their remains.

Ali Raza Syed stated in Brussels that the organization aims to secure a court intervention for the return of the bodies to Kashmir, allowing for their final rites to be conducted as per their families’ wishes.

He called for international pressure on India to release the remains and urged the United Nations, European Union, and human rights organizations to support Kashmiris’ rights. He also demanded the release of Kashmiri detainees held in Indian jails.

A conference to honor Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru is scheduled for February 10 in Brussels, organized by Kashmir Council EU. The event will include representatives from human rights organizations and social activists.
