Karachi’s C40 Megacity Status Restored After Three-Year Hiatus

Karachi: Karachi’s status as an active member of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group has been restored after a three-year suspension, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced recently. The city’s membership was deactivated in 2022, but officials have now reinstated its position among other global megacities.

According to a statement by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mark Watts, Executive Director of the C40 Cities Climate Group, acknowledged Karachi’s efforts in developing a Paris-Aligned Climate Action Plan. He expressed confidence that the city would meet the 2021-24 Leadership Standards by March 2025, including the completion and implementation of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan.

Mayor Wahab highlighted the need for Karachi to expedite progress on outstanding tasks to comply with C40 membership criteria. He assured that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is committed to adhering to international environmental standards and will work closely with the C40 Leadership Group and other environmental organizations.
