Karachi, On the occasion of World Water Day, marked annually on March 22, the Chief Executive Officer of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, has underscored the significant strides made by the corporation in meeting the water supply and sewerage demands of Karachi. Despite the myriad of civic challenges the city faces, KWSC has made notable progress in enhancing revenue generation, integrating digital innovations to curb illegal connections, and prioritizing the provision of efficient services and sustainable water distribution solutions, especially to informal settlements to combat waterborne diseases.

According to Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, the past year witnessed a remarkable increase in revenue recovery by 35% through the diligent eradication of illegal water connections, thereby securing up to 25 million gallons of water per day for equitable distribution among the city’s residents. These achievements, as highlighted by Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, reflect the corporation’s commitment to innovative water management practices and its dedication to ensuring clean water access for all Karachiites.

The KWSC spokesperson further elaborated on the significance of World Water Day, a United Nations initiative celebrated since 1993, aimed at emphasizing the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of water resources. This year, under the theme “Water for Peace,” the KWSC aims to elevate awareness about water conservation, recycling, and reuse through the Karachi Water Summit. The corporation invites collaboration from various organizations, civil society, multinationals, national NGOs, the Ministry of Health, and the Department of Education to partake in activities designed to educate the public on water conservation practices.

The spokesperson emphasized that water is a fundamental human right, pivotal for societal, economic, and environmental sustainability. Through a series of seminars and awareness campaigns in schools, universities, and hospitals, KWSC is committed to instilling the importance of water conservation and sustainable use among future generations, ensuring a secure water future for Karachi.
