Karachi: A spokesperson for the Mayor of Karachi and Parliamentary Leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karamullah Waqasi, has rejected claims by opposition parties regarding a no-confidence motion against Mayor Murtaza Wahab. Waqasi described the move as an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt the city’s ongoing development initiatives.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Waqasi emphasized that under Murtaza Wahab’s leadership, Karachi is experiencing significant progress with numerous large-scale projects underway. The PPP has focused on resolving long-standing urban challenges through practical measures, rather than rhetoric. Waqasi criticized opposition parties for attempting to mislead citizens with “baseless propaganda,” asserting that the public recognizes the difference between effective governance and political point-scoring.
Highlighting the current development work, Waqasi detailed projects nearing completion, including road construction, drainage system improvements, sanitation infrastructure modernization, and park restorations. Additionally, 34 new parks are being developed, and four major signal-free corridors are under construction. Significant infrastructure projects such as the Azeempura Flyover are advancing, commercial hubs are being modernized, and efforts are underway to preserve historical buildings and upgrade water and sewerage systems.
Waqasi accused opposition elements of conspiring out of frustration over the city’s development pace, contrasting their actions with the PPP’s commitment to constructive politics under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He dismissed remarks by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman as politically motivated and lacking factual basis, noting that major projects like University Road are progressing and will provide relief to citizens.
Waqasi also dismissed the opposition’s no-confidence efforts as “baseless, non-serious, and politically motivated,” asserting that the PPP holds a clear majority in the City Council, rendering such attempts futile. He characterized recent opposition meetings, including those with Haleem Adil Sheikh, as signs of “political anxiety and admission of failure.”
Concluding his statement, Waqasi expressed confidence in the political awareness of Karachi’s citizens, affirming their support for ongoing development efforts under Mayor Murtaza Wahab. He reiterated that efforts to transform Karachi into a modern metropolis will persist, undeterred by external pressures or conspiracies.
