Karachi Mayor Pledges Accountability Amid New Development Projects

KARACHI: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced a series of development projects and initiatives aimed at transforming the city’s infrastructure while addressing illegal activities. These efforts, he stated, are part of a broader commitment to enhancing public welfare and ensuring transparency within the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

According to a statement by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of accountability and resource allocation, highlighting that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has promised to prioritize public welfare if the KMC is under its control. He expressed intentions to take legal action against the illegal occupation of KMC parking sites by various town administrations and criticized Jamaat-e-Islami for authorizing road cutting despite ongoing road construction projects.

Speaking at the inauguration of road construction and development projects in Orangi Town, including Qatar Hospital Road, Mayor Wahab reiterated the KMC’s commitment to becoming an active and transparent institution. He noted that development schemes worth 233.6 million rupees have been completed in Orangi Town, involving water supply, sewer line repairs, paving blocks installation, and road carpeting.

The mayor also announced that a cheque of 200 million rupees was received from K-Electric, which will contribute to ongoing projects. He assured residents of further developments, revealing that work is progressing on 20 additional schemes in District West, slated for completion by June 30.

Mayor Wahab addressed issues of illegal encroachments, including ‘China cutting’ in graveyards and commercial activities in parks, which have been problematic under previous administrations. He affirmed that the current administration would not tolerate such activities, promising action against those responsible.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the mayor highlighted efforts to address water shortages by laying a new pipeline from Hub Dam. The initiative aims to secure a consistent water supply for local residents, ensuring effective use of taxpayer money and enhancing KMC’s financial stability.

The mayor also criticized Jamaat-e-Islami for granting the Sui Gas Company permissions for road cutting in North Nazimabad Town, announcing plans to involve the Anti-Corruption Department in addressing these issues. Through these measures, Mayor Wahab aims to distinguish his administration from past leadership by taking definitive action and avoiding excuses related to authority limitations.
