Karachi: Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has underscored the critical importance of blue carbon ecosystems in fostering a climate-resilient and sustainable maritime industry in Pakistan. In a statement released today, he called for the urgent conservation and restoration of pivotal marine habitats, including mangroves, sea-grasses, and salt marshes, to ensure ecological preservation.

Chaudhry emphasized that blue carbon ecosystems serve as significant carbon sinks and provide natural defenses against the challenges posed by rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and extreme weather conditions. The Indus Delta, he noted, is home to the world’s largest mangrove forests, playing a vital role in stabilizing coastlines, supporting fisheries, and acting as a protective buffer against storms.

The minister highlighted ongoing restoration efforts in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan aimed at rehabilitating these crucial ecosystems. Such initiatives, he added, are not only vital for ecological restoration but also for generating green jobs and revitalizing local economies.

The restoration of these habitats is seen as a necessary step towards building a sustainable maritime future for Pakistan, positioning the country to better withstand the impacts of climate change while supporting local communities.
