Indian Supreme Court Criticizes Manipur Government for Neglecting Medical Needs of Kuki Prisoner

New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court has strongly criticized the Manipur government for its treatment of a Kuki community undertrial prisoner, pointing to a clear bias in denying him necessary medical care due to his tribal and religious identity.

According to Kashmir Media Service, The controversy centers on the alleged neglect of a Christian tribal prisoner from the Kuki community who suffers from severe health issues including back pain, piles, and tuberculosis. The Supreme Court has condemned the BJP-led state government and police for their failure to provide medical treatment, suggesting that the decision was influenced by the prisoner’s ethnic background.

The court has ordered the immediate transfer of the prisoner to Gauhati Medical College for proper medical examination, with a directive to the Manipur government to cover all associated costs and to submit a detailed medical report by July 15. This case highlights ongoing ethnic tensions in the state, marked by recent violent clashes that have exacerbated divisions between the Hindu-dominated Meitei and the Christian-majority Kuki communities.
