Indian opposition leaders to visit IIOJK to assess ground situation

New Delhi, March 17, 2023 (PPI-OT): Top leaders of India’s opposition camp will visit Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the prevailing ground situation and listen to grievances of people of the territory. The visit will take place in the month of May. The development came after National Conference President Farooq Abdullah-led all-party delegation from IIOJK met the Indian opposition leaders in New Delhi on Thursday. Besides the NC, representatives of Peoples Democratic Party, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, National Panthers Party, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India-Marxist, Awami National Conference and others from IIOJK were part of the delegation.

However, neither BJP, nor the parties friendly to it, such as Apni Party, Peoples Conference and Democratic Progressive Azad Party, were included in the delegation. During the hour-long meeting in New Delhi, the IIOJK delegation apprised the Indian leaders about prevailing situation in the territory and sought their support for restoration of democratically elected government as well as statehood to the territory. The delegation also apprised the Indian opposition leaders of the burning issues facing the people of the occupied territory such as increasing unemployment, no transparency in recruitment process, imposition of Property Tax, eviction drive etc.

Indian politician and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said, “We all have agreed on the issues. We are ready to visit Srinagar to share the pain of the people of J and K and to give them assurance”. Farooq Abdullah in a media interview while speaking on telephone from New Delhi after the meeting said, “The opposition leaders are visiting J and K in the month of May immediately after Ramadan and a conclave will be held in Kashmir wherein all issues confronting our people will be deliberated for chalking out further course of action, particularly for restoration of statehood and immediate Assembly election”.

Besides, the NC leader said, a coordination team between a group of Indian MPs and IIOJK political leaders will be formed for regular updates on ground situation in the territory and seeking redressal by taking up the issues in and outside the Indian Parliament. He added that the leaders of the opposition parties of India assured all support to the IIOJK delegation.
