New Delhi: The widening socio-political and economic divide between India’s northern and southern states is raising concerns over the country’s stability as a federation. The southern states have accused the central government in New Delhi of systemic marginalization through its fiscal policies, potential changes in parliamentary representation, and cultural imposition.

The concerns stem from the Modi administration’s Hindutva policies, which critics argue could lead to reduced parliamentary representation for southern states if delimitation is based solely on population. This is despite states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala contributing significantly to India’s GDP. These states fear losing political influence to northern regions with higher birth rates but weaker governance.

A report by the South Asia Times highlights that the BJP’s push for a Hindu-majority identity excludes secular voices and undermines regional autonomy. The report notes that the BJP’s Hindutva agenda, deeply rooted in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), aims to culturally unify India under a Hindu identity. This vision, however, clashes with the secular and diverse values embraced by the southern states.

Political analysts point out the BJP’s dominance in the Hindi-speaking heartland and suggest that national success is often overshadowed if it does not conform to the party’s ideological preferences. Southern India, with its higher literacy rates and economic contributions, feels underrepresented in central allocations despite its significant share in tax revenues.

Additionally, there is growing apprehension in the South about the marginalization of regional languages and identities under the BJP’s policies. A Dravidian activist expressed concerns over cultural erosion, stating that cultural genocide can occur through policy rather than direct confrontation.

The situation continues to evolve as southern states navigate their position within the broader Indian federation, amid fears of diminishing influence and the imposition of a singular cultural identity.
