First Lady of Pakistan Reflects on Karsaz Tragedy Anniversary, Urges Youth to Reject Extremism

Islamabad: In a solemn message marking the 19th anniversary of the Karsaz tragedy, Pakistan’s First Lady, Ms. Asifa Bhutto Zardari, reflected on the devastating events of October 18, 2007, and urged the nation’s youth to reject extremism and embrace peaceful coexistence.

According to Press Information Department, Ms. Bhutto Zardari commemorated the more than 180 lives lost when a terrorist attack targeted a gathering in Karachi celebrating the return of her mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, from exile. Addressing the sacrifices made by those who perished, she emphasized their role as ordinary citizens who aspired for a democratic and peaceful Pakistan.

The First Lady highlighted her mother’s unwavering commitment to confronting extremism despite the risks, noting that Benazir Bhutto survived the Karsaz incident only to be killed by terrorism seventy days later. She extended her message to young Pakistanis, stressing the importance of resisting hatred and intolerance, and advocating for dialogue, education, and justice as tools against violent extremism.

Ms. Bhutto Zardari called on the youth to question and reject any narrative that promotes violence and to ensure that digital platforms do not serve as channels for extremist recruitment. She underscored the need for a national commitment towards providing education, employment, and opportunities to the younger generation, fostering a future defined by talent over fear.

In her message, she also honored all victims of terrorism in Pakistan, urging young citizens to actively stand against hatred and violence, and to contribute positively to their communities. Ms. Bhutto Zardari concluded by invoking the memory of the Karsaz martyrs as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace, democracy, and human dignity in Pakistan.
