Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, has emphasized the importance of a scientific and evidence-based approach in the adoption of Genetically Modified (GM) Corn technology in Pakistan. During the second meeting of the Committee on GM Corn in Islamabad, the Minister highlighted the need for consensus-driven efforts to advance the technology while safeguarding the interests of the country’s agriculture sector.

According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting focused on reviewing the committee’s progress and exploring the potential benefits of GM corn technology. Discussions centered on how the technology could enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and reduce import dependence. The meeting also considered the implications for Pakistan’s corn milling industry, export markets, and agricultural value chains.

Senator Aurangzeb noted that achieving coexistence between GM and non-GM corn is feasible through a robust regulatory framework and effective supply chain arrangements. To this end, the committee decided to establish a working group that includes representatives from government organizations, industry, exporters, and technology providers. This group is tasked with developing consensus-based recommendations on regulatory measures, transition strategies, biosafety protocols, and supply chain requirements.

The Finance Minister has directed the working group to engage with all stakeholders and prioritize the finalization of its recommendations.
