Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired the inaugural meeting of the committee established by the Prime Minister to formulate a National Private Equity Policy Framework. This initiative seeks to bolster Pakistan’s private equity ecosystem and enhance the mobilization of both domestic and international long-term capital.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting focused on the role of private equity in fostering long-term investment and capital formation for sustainable economic growth. The Committee emphasized private equity’s potential to direct growth capital towards emerging and priority sectors, support business expansion, and strengthen the competitiveness of Pakistani enterprises.
The Finance Minister highlighted the importance of a private-sector-led framework, with the Government’s role to create an enabling environment and ensure regulatory clarity. The aim is not to provide direct government funding but to facilitate increased participation of domestic and international investors.
Discussions included establishing a supportive taxation and regulatory framework, recognizing private equity funds as investment vehicles, and enabling long-term investment. The meeting also addressed the role of institutional investors in mobilizing capital through professionally managed private equity funds while maintaining regulatory safeguards.
The Committee explored private equity’s potential in mergers, acquisitions, restructuring, privatization, and other long-term investments. The Finance Minister stressed developing a clear pipeline of investable projects to attract investors and ensure effective capital deployment.
The Committee agreed to form four workstreams to advance its objectives and develop recommendations on taxation, regulatory framework, business strategy, and bankable business plans. These recommendations will be consolidated into a National Private Equity Policy Framework for the Prime Minister’s consideration.
Senator Aurangzeb stressed the need for practical recommendations to unlock long-term capital and support sustainable economic growth. The meeting included key government officials and members from relevant public and private sectors.
