Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday called the NGMS/5G Spectrum Auction by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority a historic milestone poised to accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation and strengthen its digital economy.

According to Press Information Department, the Finance Minister addressed participants at the auction ceremony, highlighting the culmination of efforts over the past year and a half to finalize the auction framework. He noted that the Spectrum Committee, under his chairmanship, conducted detailed deliberations to develop a framework that balances revenue optimization with fostering an ecosystem to advance Pakistan’s digital journey.

Senator Aurangzeb acknowledged the continuity of policy initiated under the Minister for Information Technology in 2021 and emphasized the importance of ongoing policy direction despite changes in government. He described the auction as a significant achievement for stakeholders involved in its completion.

The Finance Minister stressed that digital development serves as a means to broader economic and social progress, promising improved connectivity that will unlock opportunities across various sectors. He emphasized the IT and IT-enabled services sector as a key growth area, with enhanced digital infrastructure boosting exports and employment.

He mentioned initiatives supporting the digital agenda, including freelancer support, the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan vision, and expansion of digital infrastructure. The availability of a greater spectrum and 5G rollout will facilitate emerging technologies, aiding Pakistan’s transition to a modern digital economy.

Senator Aurangzeb noted the critical role of improved connectivity during crises, supporting online education and remote working. He thanked the Spectrum Committee and stakeholders for their contributions, expressing confidence in the auction’s potential to enhance connectivity, innovation, and economic opportunities nationwide.
