Experts Call on UN to Implement 1949 Resolution on Kashmir Dispute

Lahore: Experts and Kashmiri people have reiterated their commitment to the struggle for self-determination and urged the United Nations to implement the historic 1949 resolution to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, experts, speaking in connection with Right to Self-Determination Day, identified India’s expansionist designs and stubbornness as the main impediments to resolving the Kashmir issue. They noted the failure to implement the United Nations Security Council resolution from January 5, 1949, raises questions about the international body’s role in settling this dispute between two nuclear states.

PPP MNA Sehar Kamran emphasized the responsibility of the United Nations and the international community to address India’s actions in IIOJ&K and hold it accountable for not fulfilling its commitments on Kashmir. She stated that the Kashmir issue remains a significant concern, impacting peace and development in the region.

Mushaal Hussein Mullick called for practical steps from the UN and OIC leadership to support oppressed Kashmiris and Palestinians. She described the situation in IIOJK as dire, citing the use of pellet guns by Indian forces on Kashmiris.

In a related development, six prominent UN mandate-holders expressed deep concerns in a joint letter to the UN regarding severe restrictions on freedoms and widespread human rights violations in the region. The letter highlighted issues such as enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and the use of live ammunition against civilians, alongside the impact of communication shutdowns.
