ISLAMABAD: The Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, announced that an emergency has been declared in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in accordance with constitutional provisions, aiming to eradicate terrorism in the region. The declaration follows debates in the Senate, with the government emphasizing the necessity of the measure for national security.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Senate session commenced at the Parliament House with Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani presiding. During the session, the House observed Fateha for the victims of a recent railway accident, led by Opposition Leader Raja Nasir Abbas. In addressing concerns raised by the opposition, Interior Minister Naqvi underscored that the imposition of the emergency underwent thorough deliberations to ensure compliance with the Constitution. He criticized the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for opposing efforts against terrorism while highlighting the sacrifices made by security forces.
Naqvi detailed that the security situation prompted the government to engage with the PTI for unified counter-terrorism measures. Despite initial consensus, he accused Murad Saeed of undermining these efforts. Naqvi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a single agenda of combating terrorism collaboratively.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar supported the emergency’s constitutional basis, citing Article 232, and announced that the proclamation would undergo parliamentary approval within ten days. He emphasized the urgency of addressing security challenges and called for accountability regarding the use of funds designated for counter-terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Dar reiterated the government’s dedication to political dialogue alongside decisive actions against terrorism.
The Senate is scheduled to reconvene tomorrow at 4 p.m. to continue discussions.
